This is a decent strainer and mostly does the job. hence the 4 star rating. The circumference is slightly smaller than the drain hole so some of the crumbs do not get caught in the strainer. They stay on the outside and slip down the drain hole.

…..how much junk was going down my drains. Ugh. I have orchids that I water in the kitchen sink. It was always a struggle to keep bits of loose orchid bark from trying to go down the drain. These are PERFECT for that. But after using them. I just left them in the drains. Yuck. I had no clue how many tiny little bits of stuff were routinely going down my drain. Only the tiniest of bits can get in under the edges of these. Now. having said that. the best feature of these – the tiny openings – are the same thing that makes them hard to clean. Still working on that. I don’t want to waste paper towels. but “tapping the stuff” into the rubbish bin doesn’t always get it all. Every few days I run them through the dishwasher and they’re clean as new. Repeat as necessary.

How could something so simple be such a game changer!? I live with cavemen and they have never been able to figure out the “yuck trap”… Letting it get beyond clogged and never turning the little center knob correctly. I have no garbage disposal and a white enamel sink (hard to clean). Plumbers are expensive and leaving greasy food water to drain slowly WILL clog your pipes eventually..This fixed and ongoing battle in my kitchen. The light color and high shine of the metal makes little bits of food harder to ignore. The holes are a perfect size. just small enough to catch bits. but large enough that they don’t get stuck when you wipe it out into the compost and require a scrub brush (unlike like the mesh variety)..If you like to fill your sink with water sometimes (I’m sure you have your reasons. I don’t know your life) ditch the dual-purpose traps and get a rubber stopper with a chain to keep under the sink. but still BUY THESE!

I have been using the traditional sink strainers with the wire in them for years. I had one that was a good fit in the sink. but the wire started breaking loose and sticking me in my fingers. so I tossed it. But these are great. no thin wire. easy to clean and they fit very well on the side of the sink that does not have the disposal.

Appearance and function is really improved over the original. even though this strainer’s outer rim doesn’t quite cover my sink’s drain rim. Note that of the 3 strainers in my pack. 2 initially looked a bit scratched up to me. I then realized this was actually some sort of residue. A quick wash with soap and water didn’t clear it all. but a spritz of Simple Green and a microfiber did. Nicely packaged. too.
